Kudos to Isaac Lipkus and his entire team for submitting two subcontract proposals to Virginia Commonwealth University.
One of the NIH R01 applications is entitled "Characterizing Toxicant Exposure Behavior and Abuse Liability of the Electronic Waterpipe." In this study, Lipkus will assess reactions to harms of waterpipe tobacco smoking and vaping through a waterpipe bowl and the attitudes toward and intentions to use waterpipe tobacco smoking and vaping through a watepipe bowl. This assessment will be followed by analyses related to perceptions of harm.
The other NIH R01 application is titled "Effects of Waterpipe Tobacco Heating Sources and Warning Labels During Naturalistic Group Use." For this study, Lipkus will select the text/graphic warning that will accompany the waterpipe tobacco apparatus and assess the reactions to the text/graphic warnings of harm of waterpipe tobacco smoking, perceptions of harms and attitudes toward waterpipe tobacco smoking. Developing the assessment will be followed by developing the analyses plan as related to perceptions of harms, subjective reactions to smoking waterpipe tobacco and smoking topography/toxicological outcomes.
Both proposals request funding for a three-year period with a start date of April 1, 2021.
