Message from the Dean: DUSON Welcomes New Faculty

I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Xiao Hu and members of his research team Dr. Kais Gadhoumi and Dr. Ran Xiao will join DUSON’s faculty on January 1, 2020.  Dr. Hu is a distinguished researcher in the field of biomedical signal processing and machine learning and the applications of these techniques to develop innovative solutions for precise patient and brain monitoring and real-time clinical decision support.  Their synergistic work will support our school in partnering across Duke Health and the campus in important artificial intelligence initiatives.   Each will be a member of Division 3, Clinical Health Systems & Analytics. In addition, Malinda Teague, DNP, RN, CPNP-AC/PC will join DUSON’s faculty on December 1, 2019.  She will serve as the Lead Faculty of the Pediatric NP Primary Care major in the MSN  program and be a member of Healthcare of Women, Children and Families Division.

Xiao HuDr. Hu and his team come to Duke from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) where he is a full Professor of Physiological Nursing and Neurological Surgery, a faculty member of Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute, and a core member of the joint UC Berkeley – UCSF bioengineering graduate program.  There he leads a highly active research lab consisting of data scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and software engineers and closely collaborates with stakeholders in nursing, critical care/neurocritical care medicine, neurosurgery, hospital medicine, cardiology, FDA, NASA, and industry  to develop intelligent systems driven by biomedical and clinical knowledge, rich data from electronic health record and medical devices. Dr. Hu has been the principal investigator of four NIH R01, three NIH R21 research projects, and several industrial grants and has published more than 110 journal papers and been awarded six US patents. He is also a standing member of NIH/CSR Biomedical Computing and Health Informatics study section. He has mentored numerous postdoctoral fellows and served as an advisor for a number of PhD students.

GadhoumiDr. Gadhoumi is an Assistant Researcher and Associate Director in Dr. Hu’s lab at UCSF.   Before joining UCSF, he was the co-founder and head of Analytics at Stratuscent Inc., a Montreal based start-up developing next-generation intelligent chemical sensors and sensing platforms. He previously worked in telecommunication industry where he held different positions as software and system designer, technical lead and software architect and is a member of numerous scientific societies in US and Canada and recipient of many academic and professional awards.   Dr. Gadhoumi earned a PhD in biomedical engineering from McGill University and a master’s in electrical engineering both from the University of Sherbrooke.  His research interests are focused in digital health and precision medicine, specifically the application of artificial intelligence and advanced signal processing in predictive healthcare analytics, and he has authored/coauthored a number of publications that have contributed to the literature in this area.

XiaoDr. Xiao is an Assistant Professional Researcher at UCSF.  His research focuses on biomedical signal processing and applying machine learning in biomedical informatics.  Dr. Xiao received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a specialty in biomedical engineering from the University of Oklahoma.  His scholarly work includes several publications in important journals and poster and oral presentations at various professional conferences over the past few years.

Malinda TeagueDr. Teague received a BS in anthropology with a minor in chemistry from Vanderbilt University and an MS in nursing from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2002.  She earned her DNP from DUSON where her DNP project focused on implementing a standardized evaluation of pediatric sleep when assessing for attention deficit.  She also holds dual certification as a primary and an acute care PNP. For the past two years Dr. Teague has been a Clinical Instructor for both the ABSN and PNP programs here at DUSON, most recently teaching in the Pediatric Primary Care Management courses.  She has worked across the country in pediatric rheumatology, pediatric emergency medicine and urgent care, and pediatric primary care settings in both clinical and leadership roles, and was previously an Assistant Professor, Coordinator of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program, and Director of Advanced Practice Programs at the MGH Institute of Health Professions until 2016 when she moved to North Carolina. Dr. Teague practices clinically as a PNP at Duke Primary Care Pediatrics in Holly Springs and is also the Practice Medical Director for both Wake County pediatric practices, helping to develop the pediatric service line for Duke Primary Care.  She also serves as the Legislative Chair for the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association for Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and was a 2019 NAPNAP Advocacy Scholar awardee.
