Message from the Dean: Exciting News for Dr. Catherine L. Gilliss

Please join me in hearty congratulations to Catherine L. Gilliss, PhD, RN, FAAN, Helene Fuld Professor of Nursing for being named Dean of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing. Her appointment at UCSF effective, September 25!! As you may know, Catherine earned her PhD in Nursing and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at UCSF. She spent several years on their faculty, first as an Assistant Professor, then Program Director, Associate Professor and finally, Professor and Department Chair before being named Dean at Yale University’s School of Nursing.

Catherine holds the unique distinction of being the first alumna Dean of DUSON. During her 10-year tenure as Dean, and over the past three years since my arrival as Dean, Catherine’s deep commitment and dedication to Duke has contributed in countless ways to who we are as a global leader in nursing education, research and clinical care. Most recently, she chaired the Distinguished Professors Committee and helped create our new Doctor of Nursing Practice-Executive Leadership Program.

I know you will share my best wishes for Catherine as she begins this new chapter in her outstanding career. Barbara Turner and the Health of Women and Children Division is planning a reception to honor Catherine upon her retirement from Duke University.

Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN Dean and Ruby Wilson Professor of Nursing, Duke University School of Nursing Vice Chancellor for Nursing Affairs, Duke University Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for Nursing, Duke University Health System
