Message from the Dean: New Faculty Announcement

I am pleased to announce Jacqui McMillian-Bohler, PhD, CNM, CNE, and Stephanie DeVane Johnson, PhD, CNM, will join DUSON’s faculty as members of Division 1, Healthcare of Women and Children.

Jacqui will join DUSON effective December 1. She is currently on faculty at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky where she serves as the lead maternal newborn educator in the pre-licensure program. In addition to those teaching responsibilities, she is the Program Director of the BS in Health Science Program. Jacqui’s clinical background includes staffing in labor & delivery and working with women and families in a full-scope nurse-midwifery practice, and she maintains a full scope midwifery practice at the University of Louisville.  She has worked with at risk populations in South Carolina, Nashville and Louisville, and is the PI of a March of Dimes grant on Centering Pregnancy.

Jacqui received a BSN from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a MSN in Nurse-Midwifery from Vanderbilt University, and a PhD in Nursing Education from Villanova University. With the goal of understanding how teachers create powerful learning experiences in the classroom, Jacqui’s research interest is focused on exploring the concept of master teachers. Her notable recognitions include the Alumni Award for Clinical Achievement from Vanderbilt University for her work with migrant workers and pregnant teens in rural South Carolina, the American College of Nurse-Midwives Vanderbilt Nurse-Midwifery Faculty of the Year, and the Kentucky African American Nurses Association Educator of the Year Award. She is also Jonas Scholar alumnus.

Jacqui brings such enthusiasm to all of her work and we look forward to her joining us in a few months. Until then, feel free to reach out and welcome Jacqui to DUSON at JMcMillian-Bohler@spalding.edu.

Stephanie will join DUSON effective November 1. She will be teaching in the ABSN program. Stephanie is known to faculty and students in our ABSN program where as a Consulting Associate she has been engaged with the maternity courses and serves as a mentor for ABSN and Health Equity Academy students. Having taught maternity courses at UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University, Stephanie brings a wealth of evidenced based knowledge and enthusiasm to the classroom.  She has 20 years’ experience as a full scope Certified Nurse Midwife working in private practice and academic institutions, providing care for women from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Stephanie maintains her clinical practice by working part time in a private OB/GYN office in Greensboro, N.C.

Stephanie received her BSN from UNC – Charlotte, her MSN and Certification in Nurse-Midwifery from Vanderbilt University, and she earned her PhD in Nursing from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2016. While pursuing her PhD she received several scholarships and awards including a National League of Nursing Foundation Scholarship as well as a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Dissertation award.  She is a fellow of the University of Pennsylvania Research Institute.

Her professional passions include women’s health, maternal/child health and decreasing health disparities in the African-American community, more specifically, the impact of cultural and socio-historical influences on infant feeding decisions in the African American community. In addition, she is on the Board of Directors for “Pathway 2 Breastfeeding”, a community initiative that works to combat health disparities in the African-American community by providing breastfeeding education and support.

We look forward to Stephanie joining us very soon.  In the meantime, feel free to be in touch and welcome Stephanie at stephanie_devane-johnson@med.unc.edu.
