Message from the Dean: New Faculty Appointments
Please join me in welcoming Dori Steinberg and Mitchell Knisely to DUSON!
Dori Steinberg, PhD, MS, RD, joined our faculty on Jan. 1, 2018 and is a member of the Clinical Health Systems and Analytics Division.
Dr. Steinberg started at Duke in 2012 as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Duke Obesity Prevention Program and transitioned to Research Scholar at the Duke Global Health Institute in 2014. Currently, she is an Assistant Research Professor of Global Health and Associate Director of the Duke Global Digital Health Science Center. Her research focuses on digital health interventions for weight control, dietary change, and chronic disease management among adults. Dr. Steinberg has spent 15 years working in the field of obesity research, both as a clinician and researcher.
During her time at Duke Dr. Steinberg has been a co-investigator on seven successfully funded grants from NIH and Duke. Her work has been featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA Internal Medicine, and The American Journal of Public Health, as well as in mass media. She was recently awarded a K12 career development grant as a Duke BIRCWH Scholar and as part of this award is currently conducting a trial testing how to best leverage commercial smartphone applications to improve adherence to national guidelines for dietary management of hypertension for women.
Dr. Steinberg earned her B.S. in Nutrition from the Cornell University, her M.S. in Public Health from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also a Registered Dietitian and completed her dietetic training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
I am also pleased to announce Mitchell Knisely, PhD, RN-BC, ACNS-BC will join DUSON's faculty effective July 1, 2018 and will be a member of Division 2, Healthcare in Adult Populations.
Mitch will complete a postdoctoral fellowship this summer at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. His program of research seeks to identify and understand the relationships among pain and associated symptoms, self-management behaviors and omics factors in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and other chronic conditions and he has published and presented widely in these areas. In the clinical area, Mitch has led or contributed to initiatives to improve pain management in acute and outpatient care settings.
Mitch earned his BSN from Purdue University, MSN and PhD from Indiana University and trained at the NIH's NINR's 2015 Summer Genetics Institute. His research and training has been supported by a number of grants, including two NIH T32's in Genomics (T32NR009759) and Behavioral Nursing Research (T32NR007066). Mitch is also board certified as an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and in Pain Management Nursing.
