Brett Morgan and Victoria Goode recently published an article entitled "Strategies to predict and manage the risk of post-operative delirium in the elderly surgical patient" in Geriatric Nursing.

Abstract

As the U.S. population has aged over the past several decades, the number of older adults undergoing surgical procedures has significantly increased. This population presents with characteristics unique to aging and disease. The assessment of these patients’ cognitive baselines and comorbidity profiles need to be addressed throughout the perioperative continuum. Pre-surgical assessment and post-operative considerations are important to improve patient outcomes for this population, and advanced practice nurses are often managing the care of patients during these periods. Conventional approaches to screening geriatric patients prior to surgery have included focused attention to vital organ systems and often-expensive laboratory and diagnostic testing. There is value in screening pre-operative patients for cognitive impairment (CI), with the goal of stratifying care and directing management of that care based on any findings of impairment.
