Desi Newberry will join DUSON’s faculty on September 1, 2021, as the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Specialty lead faculty in the MSN Program. She will be a member of the Health of Women, Children and Families Division.

Newberry is a board-certified NNP with over 18 years of experience and currently practices at WakeMed Health and Hospitals and is a hospital-based Neonatal Resuscitation Program instructor.

Newberry returns to DUSON from Baylor University and brings many years of solid teaching experiences in both MSN and DNP programs, particularly with NNP specialty and DNP Project courses. She served on the DNP Project Taskforce, the Continuous Improvement Progress Report taskforce for AACN accreditation and the MSN Workbook committee. She also was the NNP program recruitment and retention coordinator for six years.

Outside the classroom, Newberry has contributed to the nursing literature through publications and editorials and has authored and co-authored two book chapters and over 30 articles in peer-reviewed national neonatal nursing journals. She is also actively engaged in the work of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses and the Carolina Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners.

Her research and quality improvement interests involve the examination of non-invasive practices to improve care and provide optimal health to premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. Specifically, her work focuses on the utilization of placental blood for neonatal admission labs and transcutaneous bilirubin monitoring in premature infants.

Newberry earned her DNP in 2012 from Duke University, her MSN from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her BSN from Michigan State University.
