OGACHI Announces 12th Annual Dorothy L. Powell Global Health Lecture

Hester Klopper, PhD, MBA, HonsD, FANSA, FAAN, ASSAF, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Strategy and Internationalisation at Stellenbosch University in South Africa will serve as the keynote speaker for the 12th Annual Dorothy L. Powell Global Health Lecture on Thursday, March 26 at 4:30 p.m. in Pearson, Room 1014 with a reception to immediately follow. Sponsored by the Duke University School of Nursing Office of Global and Community Health Initiatives (OGACHI), the lecture's theme will be "Global Transformation: Implications for Nursing and Nursing Education."

In her role as deputy vice chancellor, Klopper is responsible for overall organizational strategy, the institutional research, business intelligence and information governance, corporate communication, as well as the international strategy and relations. In addition, she is a professor in the Department of Global Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Klopper has been committed to the development of researchers and overseen the National Research Foundation - funded PLUME program from 2013 to 2017 and mentored 24 post-docs and supported the establishment of their research programs. She has also supervised 50 plus master and 35 plus PhD students to completion; published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles; and is the editor-in-chief of the Elsevier journal International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences.

Global health has become a focus area of her work over the past decade, and through her visionary leadership, the Global Advisory Panel on the future of Nursing and Midwifery (GAPFON) was established. She served as chairperson of GAPFON from 2017-2019. She currently serves as elected director on the Board of Directors of the Consortium for Universities in Global Health (CUGH) and director of the APO Accreditation Body Council.

As part of her global health work she is advocating for incorporation of climate related aspects in all health agendas. To this effect, she serves on the executive committee of the Global Alliance for Universities in Climate. Klopper is to date the only South African inducted into the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), a Fellow of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF), inducted into the International Hall of Fame for Research Excellence in 2016, a Fellow of the Academy of Nursing of South Africa (FANSA), a member of the South African Academy for Science and Art, and member of the Institute of Directors of South Africa (IODSA). In 2016, a Doctorate (Honoris Causa) from Oxford Brookes University was conferred recognizing her contribution to health science education and research globally.

The Dorothy L. Powell Global Health Lecture is an opportunity to bring a distinguished international expert to the campus community to address areas of particular global significance and/or critical challenges facing nursing, while furthering our strong commitment to global health. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required by 3 p.m. Monday, March 23.
