PhD Student Harris Submits NIH NRSA Fellowship Application

Kudos to PhD student Gabrielle Harris and her advisors for the submission of her NIH NRSA Fellowship application entitled "Parenting Post-Stroke: The Role of Race and Gender in the Association of Parental Stress with Health Status." This proposal requests funds for a three-year period with a start date of September 1, 2017.

Abstract: The project will focus on:  Aim 1: Describe how young adult stroke survivors’ parenting stress differs by gender and race (H1) and explore the differential effect of gender and race on the association of parenting stress and health status (H2, H3). H1 (primary hypothesis): Women and racial-ethnic minorities, specifically women who are minorities, will have greater parenting stress. H2: The negative association between parenting stress and health status will be stronger for minorities and women, after adjusting for additional sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the stroke survivor. H3: The negative association between parenting stress and health status will be stronger for women who are minorities, after adjusting for additional characteristics of the stroke survivor. Aim 2: Describe experiences of parenting post-stroke and the related stressors among young adult stroke survivors with an attention to race and gender using qualitative interviews. Aim 3: Describe the relationship of gender and race with parenting stress in young adult stroke survivors using identified thematic patterns from qualitative interviews with quantitative measures of parenting stress.
