PhD Student Lee and Im Submit Sigma Foundation Fellowship Application

Chiyoung LeeKudos to Chiyoung Lee, PhD student; and her Sponsor Eun-ok Im, associate dean for research development and regulatory affairs; for the submission of her Sigma Foundation Fellowship application entitled "The Socioeconomic Disparity in Cardiovascular Health in Older Adults in South Korea." This proposal requests funds for a one-year period with a start date of Sept. 1, 2019.

Several Korean researchers argue that the magnitude of health disparity is greatly exacerbated in old age as socioeconomic disadvantages persist in South Korea. It has been reported that socioeconomic disadvantages are highly correlated with adverse cardiovascular health outcomes. Yet, socioeconomic disparity in cardiovascular health in older adults remains uninvestigated.

This study is the first attempt to examine socioeconomic disparity in cardiovascular health in older adults in South Korea. It aims to understand time trends in disparities in cardiovascular health (Aim 1) and intermediary factors that could link one’s socioeconomic position to cardiovascular health (Aim 2).

The time-series study will help policymakers prioritize approaches for promoting health, especially in socioeconomically disadvantaged older adults. Moreover, healthcare professionals could consider intermediary factors as interventions to improve outcomes and reduce health disparities in this population.
