Zoom Tool in Sakai

The Zoom Meeting in  Sakai allows students and faculty to start and join Zoom meetings via a join link that is displayed on a Sakai course and share cloud recording links to the course.

Adding Zoom Meetings is just as easy as adding any other tool in Sakai. Just watch Eric Bloomer's demonstration of setting up a Zoom Meeting via Sakai in these videos -- Part I and Part II.

Zoom Class Recording

If you are recording your Zoom class or lectures using Zoom, remember that Duke has a limited amount of storage for Zoom recordings.  Please follow the instructions in this video for saving your recordings and making them available in Mediasite for your students. If you have any questions about this, please call the IT Service Desk at (919) 684-9200.

Zoom Features

Did you know about these Zoom features?

  • In early January 2021, Zoom will require meetings to have either a passcode or waiting room enabled. If a passcode is not enabled, a waiting room will automatically be enabled. Enabling the Passcode for a Zoom meeting created in Sakai doesn't alter the user experience since participants only need to select the Join button to enter the meeting.
  • The ability to self-select a Breakout Room is available, allowing participants to move freely among rooms. A host can create Breakout Rooms and, within their meeting, giving participants the ability to self-select which room they would like to join without needing intervention from the host. Zoom meeting participants can now select which Breakout Room they would like to participate in if the host has enabled this feature. This means participants can move freely between Breakout Rooms without the host having to assign them one. Note: The meeting host needs to be on Zoom client 5.3.0 or later to self-select Breakout Rooms.
  • Co-hosts have the same breakout room controls as the meeting host, such as starting or ending breakout rooms, assigning participants, etc.
  • The meeting or webinar host will now have the option to download the full poll results when the poll has ended during the live session, rather than waiting until the meeting or webinar has ended. This will launch their browser and begin the download of the CSV poll report. Note: The meeting host needs to be on Zoom client 5.4.7.
