Registration Now Open for Duke Machine Learning Winter School
A basic knowledge of machine learning is becoming increasingly important for many occupations, including those related to healthcare, business, law, and security, among many others. The Duke Machine Learning Winter School (MLWS), an intensive, 3-day program taking place on January 6-9 of 2019, will introduce students to the fundamentals of machine learning, focusing on recent developments in deep learning. Designed to be accessible to a broad audience, the MLWS emphasizes intuition and how machine learning technology is used in several application areas.
The first day of the MLWS will be devoted to developing a broad understanding of the fundamentals of machine learning, including model design and what it means for a machine to "learn," especially with large datasets ("big data"). The second and third days of the MLWS will address two areas in which modern deep learning is having its biggest impact: image/video analysis and natural language processing. The class will be taught by Professor and Vice Provost for Research Lawrence Carin, PhD, in conjunction with other Duke professors. The course is appropriate for students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, and staff with a basic understanding of mathematics, ideally including some familiarity with calculus and probability.
