Registration Open: NCONA Conference for June 23

Registration is open for the upcoming Annual North Carolina Oncology Navigator Association Patient Navigation Conference, "Navigating Palliative Care in Health Systems and Communities" on June 23 at UNC Friday Center in Chapel Hill, NC.

Palliative Care is at a critical juncture within the transformative process reshaping our health care system. There is growing consensus about the value and importance of palliative care services for any serious illness, yet there is lack of access to palliative care resources in many health care and community settings throughout North Carolina.  Please join us as we bring together presenters and participants to address this topic.  We will also explore the role of Patient Navigation in facilitating the health system uptake and patient utilization of Palliative Care in various health care and community settings.

Key Note Presenters:

Stacey Fisher, MD

Dr. Fisher is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Her clinical experiences have included working in a community clinic affiliatied with Denver Health, a safety net hospital, serving as a medical director of home care with a large Denver hospice and currently working on the inpatient palliative care consult service at the University of Colorado Hospital.

Marie Bakitas, DNSc, NP-C, FAAN

Dr. Bakitas has had a sustained program of substantive research, focused primarily on the issues of persons with cancer that has spanned 30 years. Her trajectory is unique, in that she began making significant research contributions as a member of an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center prior to earing her doctoral degree in 2006.  Her clinical and research careers have intermingled with and impacted the evolving evidence supporting the integration of the fields of palliative and oncology care.  She most recently received a $3.5 million NIH R01 grant for a study to determine whether palliative care provided when advanced heart-failure patients are still well will result in better quality of life, improved mood, and less symptom distress/burden for patients and/or caregivers, when compared to usual heart-failure care.

Targeted audience:  physicians, oncology nurse navigators, advanced practice nurses, administrators, care coordinators, social workers, case managers, patient navigators, community health workers, hospice professionals, lay patient navigators, fellows, medical and nursing students, patient advocates, community ambassadors, community educators, lay health advisors and peer supporters.
