Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation Request Proposals

The Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation has announced its request for proposals for two programs: The Hillman Emergent Innovation Program (HEI) and the Hillman Serious Illness and End of Life Emergent Innovation Program (HSEI). Hillman will award up to five grants per program, of $50,000 each, distributed over a 1-year period. Projects are expected to begin January 1, 2021, and end December 31, 2021.

HEI Program

This program is for creative, early-stage (untested or minimal-evidence) innovations that address health and health care problems in new ways. Nurse-led interventions should target the needs of vulnerable populations, including economically-disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ, people experiencing homelessness, rural populations, and other groups that encounter barriers to accessing quality health care services.

HSEI Program

Similar to the HEI program but targeting the unmet serious illness and end of life needs of these same vulnerable populations.

For both programs, Hillman is looking for one or more of the following:

  • Engagement of patients, families, caregivers, and/or community organizations

  • Inter-professional or multidisciplinary collaboration

  • Institutional and community partnerships

  • Provision of care in non-hospital settings

  • Measurable goals and outcomes

Please carefully read the full Request for Proposals:

If you are interested in applying for one or both of these programs, please obtain approval from your Division Chair and submit a one-page summary of your project idea to Christin Daniels at christin.daniels@duke.edu and Anita Stallings at anita.stallings@duke.edu by COB March 23, 2020. This summary should clarify to which program you are applying, include an introduction of the problem, the vulnerable population involved, your proposed innovation, how it’s rooted in nursing’s strengths, why it’s bold or innovative, how you would use the award, and expected outcomes and benefits.

We anticipate the DUSON review committee will approve one project per program to move forward for submission. Short proposals are due to the Hillman Foundation April 27, with full proposals requested by invite only due July 20h
