Silva Receives The Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty

Susan Silva, associate professor, was recently awarded The Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. This award honors nurses internationally in memory of J. Patrick Barnes for the super-human work they do for patients and families every day.

Silva received five amazing nominations!  Below are snippets from each nomination to share the essence of what she exemplifies:

  • Dr. Silva is extremely generous and self-less with her time, she listens with empathy, and is always willing to assist students in their pursuits to advance health care research and its translation and implementation to the clinical setting.
  • My first course with Dr. Silva was General Linear Models in spring 2019. In this short amount of time, she has inspired me to view statistics as more than a way to analyze research findings. She has the amazing talent to help students understand how their ability to apply and utilize the statistical methods correctly have a tremendous impact on patient outcomes.
  • Prior to starting the semester, Dr. Silva has studied about each student in her course. She already knew our name, what our research interests are, etc. She listens to us carefully. She values our opinions. She responds to us with respect.
  • Her respect for students was evident in all her interactions and she was especially sensitive to diversity. We had an excellent discussion in our first class about the naming of variables, with the goal of creating consensus in our group about how we would refer to variables related to gender, race and ethnicity.
  • Dr. Silva is more than just and professor. She is a teacher, a mentor, and an inspiration, and a friend.
