SON-IT Presents DUSONCloud at Duke TechExpo

Nichols and Williams TechExpo PresentationTechExpo is an annual event held at the Washington Duke Inn where technologists across Duke get together to see the cool tech being developed across campus.  For this year’s TechExpo held on April 12, Denise Williams, user services specialists; Carla Nichols, assistant director of information systems; and Glenn Setliff, director of information technology were invited to give a presentation about DUSONCloud, the Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment that SON-IT has been building for the School of Nursing.

AWS is the country’s leading provider of cloud technology and was recently approved for use at Duke Health.  SON-IT is one of the first Duke organizations to develop and provide services using the AWS cloud, beginning with the TAMS application developed by David Parrish and Terry Owen.

After Setliff’s brief introduction to DUSONCloud, Nichols and Williams gave attendees a detailed look at the School of Nursing’s use of AWS and answered their questions about security, cost and operation.  Most attendees have been thinking of using AWS for their projects, but have not yet made the commitment, so they were excited to learn what SON-IT has built.

Members of the School of Nursing community will be hearing more about DUSONCloud in the near future as SON-IT continues to pioneer its use at Duke.
