Staff Member Cooper Graduates from Duke Citizens' Police Academy

Charnetta Cooper recently graduated from the Duke Citizens' Police Academy. The academy is a six-week course that provides insight on the operations of the Duke University Police Department from both uniform patrol and civilian employees. The academy provides training much like what is given at an academy for police recruits.

"Being accepted into the Citizens' Academy was an awesome experience," Cooper said. "I had such a great experience in learning and participating in the hands-on experiences such as the weapons introductions and active shooter exercises. I will be doing a ride along with Duke Police soon as well as experiencing their roles in Duke Emergency Department. Overall, this has been a really enjoyable opportunity!"

Activities for the academy included:

  • Felony Vehicle Stops / T-3 Serpentine Course
  • Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Exercise
  • Mock Crime Scene Investigation
  • Introduction to Duke Healthcare Security - Life Flight tour
  • Courtroom Procedures with Superior Court Judge Jim Hardin, Jr.
  • “Active Shooter” rapid deployment scenario using participants from DUPD
  • Firearms Safety Class / Morning at the Range
  • Graduation Luncheon
