Students and Faculty Attend Nurses Day at the Legislature

Last month, 25 DUSON students and faculty attended "Nurses Day at the Legislature" hosted by the North Carolina Nurses Association. The focus of the day was “Advocacy for Action.” Students and faculty heard from presenters at the national and state level concerning key issues of health care reform, workplace safety, scope of practice, and nurse staffing- all of which translate into accessible, affordable, safe, and high quality care for patients.

A highlight of the program was a panel discussion by two registered nurses and one advanced practice nurse who currently serve in the North Carolina General Assembly. Panelists shared their personal journey to becoming legislators as well as legislation they are currently working on that has been shaped by their roles in health care.

Attendees were encouraged to be actively involved in the legislative process at the local, state, and national levels through advocacy emails, phone calls and meetings with their representatives.
