Tanabe, PhD Student Bulgin and PhD Alumna Kayle Present at American Society of Hematology Meeting

Paula Tanabe, associate dean for research development and data science; Dominique Bulgin, PhD student; and Mariam Kayle, PhD '17; recently attended the American Society of Hematology meeting in San Diego, CA.

Tanabe presented an oral education session entitled " Acute Pain Management," and a poster entitled "Outpatient Healthcare Utilization and Rates of Co-Management Among Medicaid Eligible Patients with Sickle Cell Disease in North Carolina." Beth Merwin, executive vice dean; Christian Douglas, senior statistician; and Nancy Crego, assistant professor; were co-authors of this poster.

Bulgin presented a poster entitled "Health Related Stigma and Quality of Life in Adults with Sickle Cell Disease in Jamaica." Tanabe was a co-author of this poster. Bulgin was awarded an ASH Minority Scholar award to attend this conference.

Kayle gave a podium presentation entitled "Trajectories of Sickle Cell Disease Severity during Transition to Adult Care" that was co-authored by Tanabe; Sharron Docherty, associate professor and Kayle's chair during her PhD program; and Wei Pan, associate professor and member of her PhD committee. Kayle was awarded an American Society of Hematology Abstract Achievement award.

This meeting was a premier event in malignant and non-malignant hematology and the largest worldwide hematology conference.
