Tech Tips: DUSON Testing & Coding Rooms

DUSON has 10 small rooms tucked away behind the elevators in the new IPE building. These rooms can be scheduled by faculty and staff for proctored testing, video coding using Noldus, and research requiring specialized statistical software. Here’s what you need to know about using these spaces.

The Basics

The Testing/coding rooms are located on the 3rd floor of the IPE building – IPE 3266.  These are on the hallway behind the elevators.  Walk by the treadmill rooms and turn left.

Each of the 10 rooms has a PC, a phone and a camera.  The camera is not on all the time – it only records when a member of faculty has requested proctored testing.  There are two approved uses for these rooms:

  • For a student who needs to take a test, generally to meet requirements for an accommodations plan or as a make-up test.  Testing resources must be scheduled by a faculty member using EMS, with optional proctoring (via camera) scheduled through SON-IT, which can be done by faculty or an assigned staff member.

  • For a student or researcher performing statistics or video coding using the Noldus application.  All of the coding rooms have advanced statistical software used within the school, with four of the rooms containing the advanced Noldus software used for coding videos.  Rooms can be scheduled via the EMS software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students

  • Can I reserve one of the rooms for study?

    • No.  These rooms are reserved for testing and statistical research only.

  • I am working with a faculty member on a research project that requires statistical software that I do not have.  Can I reserve one of the rooms?

    • Yes, through your faculty member.  Please let the faculty member know that you need to schedule a room for your work and they can work with us to get it on the calendar.

  • As a student, can I schedule a room for a test?

    • Please work with your faculty if you would like to use the room for testing.  They will work with SON-IT and Facilities to schedule your test.

  • If I am taking a test, how do I contact someone when I am finished or if I have a problem?

    • When you start your test, your proctor will provide their phone number.  You can call them if you need anything.  The testing will be video recorded and the proctor will be able to watch you in real-time throughout your test session.

Staff

  • Can I reserve one of the rooms for a quiet place to work?

    • No.  These rooms are reserved for testing and statistical research only.

  • I have been assigned to proctor a student testing session  Will you train me?

    • Yes, please contact SON-IT for instruction several days prior to the exam.  If a problem arises during a test, you can contact SON-IT for assistance.

Faculty

  • How do I reserve one of the rooms for a student, either for testing or research work?

    • Ask an approved EMS user to schedule the room.  All Staff Assistants have access, as well as the Facilities office.  If you are scheduling for a test, please be sure to contact SON-IT if you would like to record the testing session and/or if you are using a proctor for the testing session.

  • Which rooms are used for testing and which are used for statistics?

    • All rooms can be used for testing.

    • All rooms have specialized statistical software for use in research.

    • Four of the rooms can be used for Noldus coding.

  • How can I tell if a room is scheduled for use?

    • EMS is the best way.  Soon, we will post a digital display beside the door that will show the daily schedule, similar to the displays used for conference rooms and classrooms.

  • Can I offer the use of the testing rooms to non-DUSON colleagues?

    • Please see Tina Leiter for questions related to use other than DUSON testing and coding.

Please note:  These are quiet spaces and we ask that you remain silent if using any of the rooms.  Also, food and drink are not allowed in any of the testing/coding rooms.

As always, if you have any technical questions or problems, please contact your IT Service Desk at 919-684-9200, or email to SONIT-Support@duke.edu.
