Thanks To All Who Participated in the 2018 Pursuing Radical Transformation Health Professions Education Conference

Thank you to all those who participated in the 2018 Pursuing Radical Transformation Health Professions Education conference, on March 22 and 23, sponsored by the Institute for Education Excellence. We had two full days of idea-sharing, creative dialogue and networking. It began with our pre-conference workshop facilitated by Dr. James Lang, Professor of English and the Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption College in Worcester, MA. The workshop was entitled “Academic Integrity” and was based on his research on his 2013 book “Cheating Lessons”. We had 25 faculty from 11 states in attendance for the pre-conference workshop.

The Conference keynote address was recently renamed the Valiga Address after our own wonderful Faculty Emeritus, Terry Valiga. We were delighted that Valiga was able to come to the conference this year!

James Lang spoke on his other book and research on Small Teaching- The Science of Learning. This talk was filled with helpful, evidence-based ideas to improve student learning, enhance teaching practices and improve education! In addition to the 40 conference attendees, we had a group of 25 faculty members from Duke Kunshan University and seven staff from Learning Innovations (formally CIT) attend the keynote address.

The remainder of the conference consisted of plenary and breakout sessions from several Duke Faculty and staff as well as speakers from across the US. The topics were relevant and timely with the challenges we face today as health professions educators. Here is a list of the speakers and their session titles:

In addition to a great group of faculty and staff participation, the conference would not have been possible without the help and support of several staff. The IEE would like to thank the following people for their involvement in the conference: Keysha Hall, Stephanie Byrd, LaWanda Forte, Wendy Perry, Amy Baskin, Charnetta Cooper, Angela Goss Nashonda Thomas, Raymond Brisson, Bonita Douglas, Karen Jackson, Helen Williams, Drew Buchanan, Michael Evans and Tiffiany Parker.
