VANAP: Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Residency Program
The Durham VA and the Duke University School of Nursing leadership jointly responded to a call for proposals from the Office of Academic Affiliations to develop a program enhancing the education and training of Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioners. Planning for the residency program began in 2015.
The residency is for new nurse practitioners, and is a year-long training focused in primary care. The program is referred to a VA Nursing Academic Partnership for Graduate Education (VANAP-GE). Although the program is inter-professional, and multiple services have provided input and support, it is driven by nurses. From an individual NP resident perspective, the program aids nw nurse practitioners as they make their assessment, diagnoses and treatment plans for the Veteran patients, including post treatment evaluation. This residency enhances nurse practitioner training of the Veteran population and increased Veteran access to care.
