Veterans' Health Symposium a Success

Veterans' Health Symposium a Success

flag stethscopeThe 8th Annual Advanced Practice Provider Veterans' Health Symposium was delivered on November 13 with nearly 1,000 registrants in partnership with the Durham VA Advanced Practice Nursing Committee. This year's conference theme was Innovation and Leadership in Veteran Health Care.

This full day interprofessional symposium was delivered completely online due to COVID. With participants and attendees from across the U.S., the symposium was a tremendous success and a clear demonstration of the strong academic-practice partnership the VA and DUSON has cultivated.

Special guest keynote speaker, Dr. Richard Stone, came to Durham and delivered a fantastic live symposium keynote address speaking to the history, challenges, and future of advanced practice nursing in delivering Veteran- centric health care. Stone is the executive in charge for the entire VA Health System and an advocate for advanced practice nurses. He was quick to note his wife is an advanced practice nurse. While here for the symposium, Stone gave the First Annual Karen Lorne NP Award for Excellence.

The topics and lectures were amazing, having had a range of interprofessional presenters. The symposium was recorded and will be shared and available to view in the near future.

A special thank you to Ramon Sotelo, multimedia and user services specialist, Rodney Bean, multimedia and user services specialist, and Lindsay Johnson, administrative assistant, for their outstanding professionalism in support of the symposium. They played a tremendous part on our team. This symposium would not be possible, nor successful, without their technical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
