Volunteer at the International Students Orientation Early Move-In

Volunteer at the International Students Orientation Early Move-In

The International House staff aims to create a global community that is inclusive, supportive and welcoming. To accomplish this goal, they need your collaboration, positive energy and time! The first impression students get when they arrive to campus makes a huge impact on their first year experience, well-being and success. That’s why The International House would love for you to join them on Friday, August 16 to share the excitement of welcoming the new international students to their new home in a fun way! If you are available to volunteer, please sign up here.

Based on the community survey results, International Orientation evaluations, feedback from IHOPs, and focus group meetings, international students often experience isolation and loneliness, especially during the first week of their early arrival at Duke due to lack of assistance and interaction with the larger Duke community. Therefore, we, as the International House staff, strongly believe that the early move-in process can be improved with the support of volunteers who can bring lots of enthusiasm, assistance, and energy.

 Early Move-in Objectives:

  1. Welcoming international students and their family members in a way that mirrors the typical move-in day prior to orientation week.
  2. Involving campus partners in practicing hospitality towards new international students to reflect a truly internationalized institution.
  3. Engaging new students and family members with Duke staff and faculty to expose both parties to the diversity of Duke’s cultural and institutional landscape.
