Yoga is a form of exercise that creates strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and the body. Yoga typically includes activities such as breathing exercises, meditation and assuming postures that stretch and flex various muscle groups.

According to the American Osteopathic Association, physical benefits of yoga include:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased muscle strength and tone
  • Improved respiration, energy and vitality
  • Maintaining a balanced metabolism
  • Weight reduction
  • Cardio and circulatory health
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Protection from injury

In addition to the physical benefits, one of the best benefits is how it helps a person manage stress, mental clarity and calmness, increase body awareness, centers attention, and sharpens concentration.
