El Centro Hispano in collaboration with Duke School of Nursing and the Latino Health Project at Duke University are offering 10-week courses focusing on Medical Spanish. Classes start on Jan. 29 and continue through April 3.

The Medical Spanish program is designed especially for health care workers. This program was created by Language Institute working in collaboration with Duke School of Nursing and Latino Health Project at Duke University in 2004 and has had many excellent results. The main objective of this program is facilitate a better communication between health care providers and their Latino patients in Durham. Health care workers who want to learn Spanish will experience more direct and easy communication with their patients and be able to provide them information in Spanish about their health and treatments. Students learn medical vocabulary, grammar, useful questions and expressions. Medical Spanish Program is a session of 10 weeks, 2 hours per week.

Two-hour classes will be held weekly as follows:

Level 1 No previous Spanish knowledge required

Monday         5:15-7:15 at Duke South Clinic, Durham NC 27710

Tuesday         3:00-5:00 at Duke Regional Hospital, Durham NC 27704

Level 2 Prerequisites: Basic grammar, verb Ser and Estar, parts of the body, medical vocabulary

Monday        3:00-5:00 at Duke Regional Hospital

Wednesday   5:15-7:15 at Duke South Clinic

Level 3 Prerequisites: Present tense, numbers, direct and indirect pronouns, medical vocabulary                                         

Thursday      5:15-7:15 at Duke South Clinic

Level 4 Prerequisites: Verbs past tense and command, idiomatic expressions, medical vocabulary

Monday          5:15 - 7:15 at Duke South Clinic
