Strategic Plan Update: We’re Ready for Take Off & Want You Onboard

Strategic Plan Update: We’re Ready for Take Off & Want You Onboard

Since October of 2015, the entire community of nursing and health care researchers, educators, clinicians, alumni, students and staff have been busy establishing a vision, goals and strategies that will launch DUSON into a future of endless opportunities.

In a recent Dean’s All Faculty and Staff meeting, Dean Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, introduced the implementation plan for the next academic school year and how it is connected to several outside entities.

“DUSON is nested in several different layers – Duke Health, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, and our discipline and profession,” Broome said. “Our strategic plan can be influencers of these layers.”

The Strategic Plan comes with a clearer and purposeful vision statement: “Together transforming the future of nursing, to advance health with individuals, families and communities.”

The School has also identified six new core values – Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Respect, Innovation and Diversity & Inclusiveness.

As the strategic plan not only creates a vision for the future, it also identifies a pathway that will help the School align resources, prioritize choices and create new partnerships. With this, comes six new strategic focus areas the entire DUSON community will focus on over the next five years: Education, Research, Clinical Practice, Community Health Improvement, Global Health, and People and Environment. Each of these focus areas has three to five goals and strategies for each goal.

We Want You!

Executing the strategic plan isn’t a one-person job, it will take the effort of the entire community. “Implementing our strategic plan cannot be done without the strength, vision and expertise of our faculty and staff,” said Broome. “We want everyone to be involved and wherever they want to use their talent, time and energy is where we want them.”

Faculty and staff are encouraged to commit 10 hours towards helping the School implement the new plan. Leaders with direct reports are strongly encouraged to allow employees time to engage with the implementation process.

Implementation

Each strategic focus area has an executive sponsor who will oversee the strategic planning of their area. Executive sponsors are also responsible for recruiting Strategy Leads who are responsible for building a team to assist in implementing their respective strategies.
