Give to the Duke University School of Nursing
Duke University School of Nursing has always looked to nurses to be advocates for patients and their families. Today, thanks to the generous support of friends and alumni donors, we are one of the best schools in the country for preparing nurses to provide patient-centered care for the elderly, the chronically ill, and sick children.
The School of Nursing currently boasts our largest enrollment, a prestigious faculty, and national recognition for research funding. With your support, we can continue to champion our long tradition of educating the thinking nurse — men and women empowered to lead change in health and medicine here at home and around the world.
Your generosity — whether an annual fund contribution, planned gift, or other contribution — is crucial to our success. We invite you to explore the many ways to give to the School of Nursing and help advance our mission to transform the future of nursing and healthcare.
Together, we can make a significant difference.

Learn More About Different Ways to Give
Cash and Pledges
One of the simplest ways to give, an outright gift may be declared as a charitable deduction on your federal income tax return for the year you make the gift — up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. Pledges may be paid over a period of five years.
Real Estate
Donate land or other property to Duke, whether it’s a residential or vacation home, a farm, a commercial building, residential lots, or unimproved land. You will enjoy the same benefits with gifts of real estate as you would with gifts of appreciated stock.
Charitable IRA Rollover
An IRA rollover gift can be an easy and effective way of giving to Duke. IRA owners age 70 and a half or older can make a direct, tax-free transfer of up to $100,000 a year from their individual retirement account to a public charity like Duke University. Donors can now consider using IRA rollover gifts to satisfy multiyear pledges to the Annual Fund, create or add to endowments, or support other charitable purposes at Duke.
Bequests
Some of Duke’s most generous gifts have come to us under the terms of a donor’s will. Today’s federal estate tax laws favor charitable bequests. Like other gifts, bequests can be given without restriction or designated for specific purposes or special areas of research.
Securities
Give stock — both publicly and privately owned — or bonds to Duke. Stock gifts can offer significant tax benefits. If you itemize, you are entitled to a charitable income tax deduction for the full value of your gift, provided you have owned the securities for more than 12 months. You avoid paying a tax on capital gains that you would owe if you sold the securities.
Other Forms of Giving
There are many other forms of giving to Duke, including pooled income fund gifts, charitable gift annuities, charitable lead trusts, and retirement plans.
Funding Opportunities
Your support through alumni giving and other contributions helps the School of Nursing prepare the next generation of nursing leaders to advance patient care and innovate in health solutions. Through the following funding opportunities, you can make a direct and meaningful impact on our students, faculty, and communities we serve.
School of Nursing Annual Fund
A gift of any amount to the Nursing Annual Fund provides the school with unrestricted dollars that directly impact our students, allowing us to shape the future of nursing. Donors who make a gift of $1,000 or more are invited to join the Bessie Baker Society, the school’s leadership annual giving society.
Scholarships
Endowed scholarships, funded by alumni donors and other supporters, create a lasting legacy that will benefit nursing students for generations to come. Scholarships, awarded based on merit or need, allow many of our students to experience the world-class educational opportunities the School of Nursing provides.
Outreach Programs
Directly support the School of Nursing’s vision for the future by providing resources for our strategic focus areas of Community Health Improvement and Global Health. Alumni giving and the generosity of others help support outreach initiatives to improve the health outcomes of vulnerable populations throughout our local and global communities.
