Process
ABSN Students

Plan Ahead - Attend an information session to learn more about each global site and the opportunites that are available.

Complete an Application - Students will be notified by the Office of Global and Community Health Affairs (OGACHI) when the online application is open. ABSN students apply during their first semester. The application includes written essays.

Application Review and Interview - OGACHI works with the affiliated course faculty to review all student applications. All candidates are interviewed. Students must be in good academic standing to participate.

Global Clinical Immersion Experience (GCIE) Acceptance and Placement - In order to accept participation, students must complete several requirements and forms. OGACHI will work with global partners to confirm clinical placement availability and secure logistical arrangements.

Complete Course Registration and Pre-deployment Activities - OGACHI works closely with the affiliated course faculty and global partners to schedule and deliver mandatory pre-deployment activities that prepare students for their global experience.
MSN Students

Plan Ahead - MSN students should discuss their global health interest with their advisor to identify where a global experience will best fit into their matriculation plan.

Complete an Application - Students will be notified by OGACHI when the online application is open. MSN student application deadlines occur annually, March 1, for the following academic year. The application includes a personal statement and personal and professional objectives.

Application Review and Interview - OGACHI works with the affiliated course faculty to review all student applications. All candidates are interviewed. Students must be in good academic standing to participate.

Global Clinical Immersion Experience Acceptance and Placement - In order to accept participation, students must complete several requirements and forms. MSN students pay a non-refundable $300 deposit. OGACHI will work with global partners to confirm clinical placement availability and secure logistical arrangements.

Fees
ABSN Students
GCIE program fees affiliated with NUR 397 Community Health and Nursing are established annually by the Duke Board of Trustees and currently range in price from $3,500 to $5,250. Program fees are charged through the Bursar's Office and may be factored into ABSN student financial aid packages. Payment for experiences that occur in spring (April/May) are due the first business day in January, and payment for experiences that occur in the summer (August) are due in May. Other expenses not contained within the GCIE fees should be factored into the anticipated costs affiliated with the global experience. These out-of-pocket expenses vary by experience and include: passport and passport photo fees, baggage fees, vaccinations, treatments and medications not covered by insurance, spending money and incidentals not included in the trip.

MSN Students
With the exception of the Exploring Medicine in Honduras experience, there are no established program fees associated with GCIEs for graduate students. All of the costs are out-of-pocket and cannot be factored into financial aid. In addition to tuition for the affiliated course (NUR 554, NUR 745) taken during the semester of student travel, the estimated costs, based on past student experience, range from $3,000 to $4,500 depending upon the location, length of stay, available accommodations and the nature of the experience. These costs include: global partner administrative fees, economy airfare, travel insurance, administrative/clinic fees (if applicable), accommodations, ground transportation, food, passport fees, visa/work permits and basic living and personal expenses. All students must carry medical insurance, and there may be additional fees for vaccinations and medications that are not covered by student insurance. An outline of site specific expenses will be provided during pre-departure planning or can be requested ahead of time.
Cullman Foundation Scholarship
The Hugh & Nan Cullman Nursing Scholarship fund was established in 2009 to support scholarships for nursing students participating in DUSON-sponsored global health and clinical immersion experiences. Each year, the amount of the award amounts associated with the Cullman Endowment is determined by DUSON leadership. To support the intent of the donors, the amount awarded to students engaging in a global clinical immersion experience is usually higher for students going to the Caribbean or Latin America.
There is no application for this scholarship. Once students are accepted into the DUSON-sponsored global clinical immersion experience, the Office of Global and Community Health Initiatives (OGACHI) will provide the student information to the Financial Aid office. The Cullman scholarship will post to the student’s Bursar account in the semester of the global trip.
Note: If the student does not complete the global clinical immersion experience, the scholarship will be cancelled.
