Duke Health Names New Senior VP, Treasurer, and CFO

This letter comes from A. Eugene Washington, chancellor for health affairs at Duke University and president and CEO of the Duke University Health System:

With great pleasure, I write to announce that John P. Mordach will join Duke as senior vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer (CFO), Duke University Health System (DUHS), effective June 29, 2020. John is an exceptional executive leader with deep experience in academic medicine and profound understanding of healthcare finance and operations. Drawing on his diverse senior financial roles over the past 30 years, John will bring great value to our organization during this time of extraordinary change in the world of health and health care.

In his role, John will provide strategic oversight to the overall revenue strategy for the health system, including full accountability for corporate finance, financial operations, revenue cycle, treasury and managed care, so we can continue delivering on our promise of highest-quality patient care in a value-based environment. John’s financial leadership will also guide capital planning during a time of significant change to advance the quality, growth, expansion and population health strategies important to sustaining our clinical enterprise. His proven track record of operational improvement, community impact, and championing change will be a tremendous asset to our leadership team. He will serve as a member of the executive team, reporting to me.

John brings broad experience to his role, serving most recently as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Rush University Medical Center and the Rush University System for Health. During his time at Rush, John helped lead the organization through significant growth opportunities and strengthened financial results that catalyzed six ratings upgrades. Prior to his leadership at Rush, John held leadership positions at Loyola University Health System (now Trinity Health), Edward Health Services Corporation, the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System, and Tufts New England Medical Center.

John has been a recipient of the Chief Financial Officer of the Year (large not-for-profit sector) award by the Chicago Chapter of the Financial Executives International Organization. He was also twice named one of the top 150 Hospital and Health System Chief Financial Officers in Becker’s Hospital Review. A New England native, John holds a B.S.B.A. in Accounting from Merrimack College, where he graduated summa cum laude, and an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He also holds a CPA.

John’s selection as our next Chief Financial Officer follows an extensive national search involving many individuals across Duke Health and Duke University. To all who participated, I express my great appreciation for the time and effort you devoted to this successful recruitment.

John succeeds Ken Morris, who will retire in June after nearly 20 years of outstanding service to the organization.

Please join me in congratulating John on his appointment to this critical leadership role and in welcoming him to Duke Health.
