Presentation Overview

Men comprise the minority of entry-level baccalaureate nursing students, which places them at risk for gender-associated incivility and sexual harassment by their female counterparts in the classroom, online, and clinical environments. These harassing behaviors, whether initiated by faculty, students, or administrators can create a considerable challenge for nursing students. If left unaddressed, these offenses may progress into more serious or threatening situations, negatively affect mental and physical well-being, and obstruct learning. A day-long, interactive faculty development workshop was developed to train nursing faculty to identify and implement proactive and reactive strategies to address uncivil and harassing behaviors. The key elements and outcomes of this workshop will be shared. Similar approaches may be useful for educational programs that wish to empower others to identify and address other forms of discrimination, harassment, and inequitable behaviors experienced by underrepresented or marginalized students.
