April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week, a time to put a spotlight on and have a national conversation about Black maternal health in the U.S., according to Black Mamas Matter Alliance, a nonprofit organization that founded the initiative four years ago. The article discusses why more and more Black women are hiring doulas to serve as support systems and advocates for them before, during and after childbirth.

A quote from McMillian-Bohler, who is also a certified nurse midwife, is featured along with reference to her involvement as a program leader in an UNC-related project. An initiative to improve birth outcomes for Black women by increasing their access to trained Black doulas has received the C. Felix Harvey Award to Advance Institutional Priorities at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Venus Standard, assistant clinical professor in the UNC School of Medicine’s department of family medicine, will lead the pilot doula training program that was selected for the award.
