Message from the Dean: Brion Returns to DUSON

BrionI am pleased to announce that John Brion, PhD, PMH NP-BC, will join DUSON’s faculty on February 1, 2020. He will be a member of the Healthcare in Adult Populations Division and assume important responsibilities in the MSN program’s Psych Mental Health Specialty. 

Dr. Brion is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with over 30 years of nursing experience. He currently practices in a community-based mental health treatment facility, treating individuals experiencing psychiatric illness and drug/alcohol addiction. Prior to this, he was on the faculty and served as the Director of the Graduate Entry Program at The Ohio State University (OSU), and was an Assistant Professor at DUSON from 2007 to 2013. His scholarship is focused on psychosocial adaptation to chronic illness, specifically HIV, and more recently on the role of self-compassion in successful adaptation to physical and mental illness.

Dr. Brion is the former Director of the AIDS Drug Assistance Program for the Ohio Department of Health, the Executive Director of the Ohio Board of Nursing, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the American Assembly for Men in Nursing. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, American Psychiatric Nurses Association and American Association of Nurse Practitioners.  He is also a founding member of DUSON’s own  chapter of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing.

Dr. Brion earned his PhD in nursing with a cognate focus in clinical counseling in 2007 from OSU. He also holds a BSN, an MS in adult health nursing, and post-master’s certification in psychiatric nursing.
