RTI Social Scientist Featured Speaker of Event on 11/12
Please join us for the next Research Development Workshop Series, “Translating Nursing Research and Practice for the Public Sphere: Emerging from the Shadows” November 12 from noon to 1 p.m. on Zoom.
About the Session
As many of you know, the World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. How can we encourage nurse scientists, teachers and clinicians to play a leadership role in academic and public settings by telling their stories and addressing patient and population needs? What can lessons learned about the public information environment offer us? What roles can health care professionals play in addressing medical misinformation? Brian Southwell will join us for an exploration of these questions.
About the Speaker
This session features Brian Southwell, senior director of Science in the Public Sphere Program for the Center for Communication Science at RTI International. He is a social scientist who oversees quantitative and qualitative research to assess risk perceptions, mental models of scientific concepts, and public trust in science and scientists. Southwell also is an active participant in efforts to address public understanding of science through peer-reviewed publications as well as public commentary. In addition to his adjunct appointments at Duke's Social Science Research Institute and UNC, Southwell also hosts a radio show for WNCU-FM weekly broadcast called “The Measure of Everyday Life” about the intersections between social science and public discourse.
