Community Scholar Award

The Community Scholar Award is given in honor of the Scott and Williamson Families. The award is open to PhD, DNP, MSN, and ABSN Students.

Margie Scott

Margie Scott, a lifelong resident of Raleigh, NC, was the second oldest of eight children and the first in her family to graduate high school. After attending a year of trade school, she held management positions in various service industries. She was active in faith-based and community organizations, with a supernatural drive to support, uplift, and encourage single mothers and young women.

Eva and Leroy Williamson

Both Eva and Leroy Williamson cheerfully served their communities in multiple capacities and have had a life-long commitment to education and learning. Eva Williamson's love of learning led her to become the first in her family to go to college and the second Black woman in the Technology and Science program at the University of Dayton. Leroy Williamson, a North Carolina native, proudly served in the U.S. Army and then completed his education at North Carolina Central University, majoring in History and Mathematics.

Award Amount

$500 annually

Award Eligibility

Open to PhD, DNP, MSN, and ABSN students

Award Use

The award can be used for the following:

  • Student involved health promotion activities with underserved areas or populations in the Durham or Raleigh community. If the applicant is not proposing a project, they should provide clear evidence of their past and current engagement in community health in their personal statement.
  • Individual or group funding for a small community project. Projects may take the shape of, but are not limited to:
    - Speaker(s) - Mini-conference - Workshop - Film Showing - Seed money to establish new community-academic collaborations - Small research or practice opportunities
  • Collaborative projects with historically minority serving institutions

Special consideration will be given to proposals that include how the project relates to the health of women and families.

How to Apply

Applications should be no longer than two to three pages and including the following:

  • Personal Statement: Describe your involvement with and commitment to community health. Discuss how this award might support your personal and/or professional goals.
  • Project Description: If proposing a project, also include a description of the proposed activity. Provide information on the need that the project will address, community partners, the number of anticipated participants, and objectives of the proposed activity.
  • Budget: Include a budget to show how the funds will be used to support the community project. A budget is not required if award is to recognize past work.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Excellence Award

The Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council is committed to recognizing a faculty or staff member who has made significant contributions to the DUSON community.

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Excellence Award is presented to a faculty or staff member who embodies the DUSON CORE Values (Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Respect, Innovation, and Diversity and Inclusiveness) DUSON mission and values within the diversity statement.

Criteria

The recipient of this award is an individual who has demonstrated leadership and innovation in the DUSON community by meeting one or more of the following criteria:

Teaching & Student Development
A faculty or staff member who has excelled in serving the student body through developing and implementing culturally relevant and unbiased services or resources to support the needs of historically marginalized students. This can be inclusive of establishing an initiative, project and/or program for a specific student population.

Community Service
A faculty or staff member is/has participated in or led meaningful collaborations, fostered relationships to establish lasting partnerships, and/or created initiatives with historically marginalized communities using innovative approaches to address health inequities and is viewed as a model for community service.

Research & Scholarship
A faculty or staff member whose scholarship or support of scholarship has made a significant and lasting impact on diversity in the field of Nursing and health. This may include research that addresses inequities in healthcare and leads to improving health outcomes for historically marginalized groups, and/or promoting diversity in nursing research.

Minimum Selection Eligibility Criteria

*Faculty and Staff nominees must:

  • Be employed as a faculty or staff member by DUSON for a minimum of one year as his/her/their primary Duke pay point on the date the nomination is submitted.
  • Have received a Successful or Exceptional rating on the most recently completed formal performance review.
  • Not be in a formal performance counseling process.

*Non-regular rank faculty must:

  • Have a minimum of three years as a non-regular rank faculty member.
  • Be approved by DUSON for reappointment.

Nomination Process

Self-nominations will not be accepted. Recipients are nominated annually by faculty, staff, or student by completing the nomination form. Nominations dates will be provided each calendar year. If a nominator would like to nominate more than one faculty or staff member, a separate nomination form will need to be completed for each faculty or staff member.

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council will review the nominations and select one award winner. The award will be presented during the DUSON Faculty & Staff Awards Ceremony.

Gayle B. Harris Excellence Award

The Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council is committed to recognizing a student who has made significant contributions within the DUSON community. The Gayle B. Harris Excellence Award is presented to a student who embodies the DUSON Core Values of Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Respect, Innovation, Diversity, Inclusiveness, and Belonging and the components of the DUSON Diversity Statement. The award is open to PhD, DNP, MSN, and ABSN Students.

Gayle B Harris

Gayle B. Harris, is a Distinguished Alumna of the Duke University School of Nursing. Under Harris’ leadership, Durham County led the way in implementing rules and policies designed to protect the public health of the entire community. The Gayle B. Harris Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Excellence Award honors her impactful legacy.

Criteria

Through nominations submitted by faculty, staff or students, the recipient of this award is a student who has demonstrated a commitment to racial and social justice and DUSON DEI initiatives.

Leadership
A student who has excelled in serving the student body through identifying, developing and/or implementing resources to better meet the needs of students.

Community Service
A student who has participated in or led meaningful collaborations, established lasting partnerships and/or created initiatives with a DUSON, Durham, or other community group. This individual demonstrates a unique ability to foster relationships, collaborations and/or partnerships with these groups, utilizes innovative approaches to collaborate with community partners, and is viewed as a role model for community service.

Scholarship
A student whose scholarship has made an impact on diversity in the field of Nursing. This may include addressing racial and social justice issues through dissemination (i.e., posters, manuscripts, or seminars). In addition, the student can show impact through dissemination of research, excellence in clinical practice or quality improvement projects that improve health outcomes for underrepresented minorities.

Minimum Selection Eligibility Criteria

Student nominees must:

  • Have completed a minimum of half of their curriculum at DUSON
  • Maintain academic excellence demonstrated by an overall GPA of 3.5

Self-nominations will not be accepted. Recipients are nominated annually by faculty, staff, or peer students by completing the nomination form. Nominations dates will be provided each calendar year. If a nominator would like to nominate more than one student, a separate nomination form will need to be completed for each student.

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council will review the nominations and select one award winner. The award will be presented during the DUSON Faculty & Staff Awards Ceremony.
