Office of Global and Community Health Initiatives

2021 QS Global Ranking

Welcome to the Office of Global and Community Health Initiatives! We live in an increasingly diverse and global community. Now more than ever, it is vital to cultivate nurse leaders who are culturally sensitive, aware of current and emerging health needs and poised to address health disparities locally, nationally and globally.   As the Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) continues to build upon our legacy as a leader in nursing education, research and clinical practice, we expand our vision to include bi-directional global activities that not only amplify the School’s mission but also positively impact nursing and health care delivery worldwide.

The Office of Global and Community Health Initiatives (OGACHI) was established in 2006 to manage and promote local, regional and international activities for the School of Nursing.

Our Mission

Together, we prepare global citizens and empower students, clinicians, scholars, and partners to promote health equity, both in our local community and worldwide, through education, research, and innovative programming.

Our Vision

Through our global office, we're taking DUSON to the world and bringing the world to DUSON. Through the DUSON Community Health Improvement Partnership Program (D-CHIPP), we're partnering with the community to advance health.

Our Values

OGACHI fully supports the core values of the Duke University School of Nursing. These values - excellence, integrity, collaboration, respect, innovation, and diversity and inclusiveness - are essential to our work. However, by the nature of our global and community health work, there are additional core values guiding this work. These values are:

  • Mutually beneficial: The work we do is intended to be sustainable with a non-paternalistic, non-ethnocentric approach where the strengths, talents, and resources of both partners are optimized.

  • Focused: A strategic and deliberate approach is utilized to efficiently utilize resources and to ensure capacity, reciprocity, and sustainability.

  • Humility: Through a humble approach, we strive to promote fairness and acceptance while always demonstrating sensitivity, respect, and integrity in the work we do.

  • Passion: As individuals and a collective team, we approach our work with fervency.
