Special Services for School of Nursing Military Students

As a leading nursing school for active-duty military and veterans, Duke University School of Nursing is proud of our long-standing commitment to supporting the unique needs of military students. Here, you’ll receive one of the best nursing educations in the nation, along with access to the world-class resources of Duke University Medical Center.

All School of Nursing military students receive the special attention they deserve through our military programs:

  • Duke offers special sequencing of course offerings to allow military students to complete their studies, in most cases, within the time allotted by their branch of the armed forces.
  • Duke offers some courses in an online format while still meeting the military requirements for most courses to be offered in a traditional on-campus environment.
  • Duke coordinates required clinical experiences so that, if desired by the student, practice can usually take place in a military treatment facility (MTF).
  • The School of Nursing employs faculty who represent each branch of the armed services to assist with military academic evaluations.

Tuition Assistance for Active-Duty Military Enrolling in a Graduate Nursing Program

The Duke University School of Nursing supports active duty military students with tuition expenses through a The Duke University School of Nursing is proud to stand among the top nursing schools for active-duty military, offering tailored scholarships to help service members advance their education and careers.

Active-duty Army, Navy, and Air Force students who have been admitted to a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program and meet the eligibility criteria are automatically considered for DUSON’s military scholarship; Master of Nursing (MN) and certificate program students are not eligible for this scholarship.

School of Nursing military scholarships range from $40,000 to $56,000 total toward required tuition and fees. Scholarship award notifications are sent through the Admissions portal shortly after acceptance.

Veterans who are eligible for 100% of Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefits are not eligible for the active-duty scholarship but are eligible for Yellow Ribbon funding. See the section below for more information.

Additional Assistance for Veterans

Duke University School of Nursing participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program under the Post 9/11 GI Bill®, offering scholarships for eligible military veterans and dependents in the MN, MSN, and DNP programs. Scholarships are provided annually for a select number of students in the MN, MSN, and DNP programs as part of the Yellow Ribbon initiative.

Additional information about veterans’ education benefits is available through the Office of the University Registrar, along with guidance on utilizing Department of Defense Tuition Assistance for approved programs and navigating the admissions process. Veterans are encouraged to consult their Educational Services Officer or military service counselor before enrollment.

Nurse Practitioner Residency in Primary Care for Veterans

In partnership with the Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System, Duke University School of Nursing offers a pioneering post-graduate nurse practitioner residency in primary care for veterans. This 12-month, military-friendly nursing program provides specialized training for new AGNP or FNP graduates aspiring to serve veterans. Through this program, nurse practitioners:

  • Develop expertise in primary care for veterans’ unique healthcare needs
  • Transition from novice to competent practitioners through mentored clinical training
  • Gain experience in skills training, specialty rotations, and quality improvement projects
  • Enhance their leadership abilities and critical thinking skills while making a tangible impact on veterans’ health and well-being,

Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship, recent graduation from an accredited NP program, certification eligibility, and unrestricted NP and RN licensure in North Carolina.

Duke University Office of Student Veterans

In addition to the School of Nursing’s military programs, Duke University’s Office of Student Veterans provides comprehensive support for undergraduate, graduate, and professional school veterans. The office focuses on three core objectives:

  • Developing and implementing opportunities for community building
  • Serve as a resource both on- and off-campus for student veterans
  • Advocacy on behalf of the military-affiliated community

By collaborating with students, faculty, and staff, the office ensures that students in our military-friendly nursing programs receive the guidance and resources needed to thrive academically and personally.
