What Population-Wide Data and Our Future Health UK Reveal About Families, Health, and Bias
The scale and coverage of whole-population data linkage and emerging next-generation biobanks offers unique opportunities to advance multiple research domains. This talk first provides some applied examples where we linked whole-population hospital and birth administration records to uncover rare and new predictors of childlessness, and findings from family network and genetic linkage, and multigenerational family data. I then discuss our analysis of the latest December 2025 release of the ~2.5 Million person Our Future Health UK data, which strives to collect up to 5 Million.
A Fair Work Week: Raising the Floor on Precarious Scheduling
For many, work is a powerful source of meaning and belonging as well as economic sufficiency. While good jobs can facilitate worker and family health and economic security, large shares of the American workforce appear to contend with jobs that are precarious. However, our ability to describe and understand the contours and consequences of that precarity have been limited by existing data.
Seven Decades: How We Evolved to Live Longer
The evolution of human longevity still remains a curious puzzle. Here I provide some new perspectives on the why and how of longevity over the course of human evolution, using longitudinal study of subsistence societies as an imperfect lens for gaining insight. I argue that our evolved human lifespan is about seven decades, and that the multifaceted contributions of middle-to-older aged adults is part of the reason why.
Mobile Health Assessment
Health Assessment is a free, confidential health screening provided through Duke benefits. It includes total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI, waist circumference height, weight and body mass index measurements. Additionally, there is a goal setting and referral session with a nurse, dietitian, or fitness specialist. Many participants find the coaching session helps them get started making lifestyle changes and connects them to LIVE FOR LIFE and community resources to support them. Health Assessments are available to all active Duke employees.
CDVS Workshop: Ethics of Data Management and Sharing
This workshop will explore the many different ethical issues that can arise with data management and sharing and strategies to address those issues. Topics covered will include a framework for analyzing ethical cases, the use of secondary data in research, working with human participants, senstive ecosystems, AI, and the impact of laws on data sharing. We will also explore the application of diversity and equity principles to open science and data sharing. For instance, how can researchers ethically collect, handle, and share data from certain communities, such as Indigenous People?

Faculty panel for non-federal funding: Social Sciences & Humanities
Join the Office for Research and Innovation (OR&I) for a panel discussion featuring Social Sciences and Humanities faculty who have successfully pursued non-federal research funding. Hear firsthand how they identified opportunities, built relationships with foundations and industry partners, and balanced these awards with their broader research programs.
These sessions are designed for researchers who are curious about diversifying their funding portfolio or just getting started with foundation, corporate, or philanthropic support.
